During this class we spent about half of the class talking about the Modernization Theory, Karal Marx and Victor Hugo. I really appreciated the dumbed down explanation of the Modernization Theory. Having the theory explained in 4 steps made the topic much easier to understand.

I also helped having Marx's thoughts summed up as ,the unequal collective society will organize itself into a bloc to create an equal collective society and  Hugo's thoughts as ... revolutions start when people living miserable lives rise up and kill those holding then down.

The second part of the class we discussed the movie Les Miserables. We spoke about what exactly made specific characters (Fantine, Cosette, Marcius, Jean Valjean, Eponine, The Thenadirs, Javert, Gavronche and the people at the barricade ) lives miserable. After the discussion in which we discussed what each of the characters represented,I felt that either Fantine who represents the future generations or Cosette who represents someone with their life mapped out/ pre-planned had the most miserable life.
Class began with recapping the assignment about formal and functional spaces. For me personally the hardest part of the assignment was coming up with examples conflict between functional and formal spaces and when functional spaces become formal spaces. This task was made a lot easier once discussed as a class and a few examples such as  side walks and the Amish were suggested for formal and functional space conflicts. The Embassy and disney were examples provided for functional spaces that become formal spaces. Following this we spoke about Supranationalism and various security contracts which other countries such as, NATO and NAFTA. We had a discussion about trades between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. An example is with lower tax rates the U.S gave cheaper labor to Mexico.
In class we discussed  what formal and functional spaces are and how these spaces cause conflicts. We also spoke about different boarders, how they are defined and what issues they can cause such as strife. We spent learned talking about types of power but mostly spoke about military power. We wrapped up class talking about a countries size, compact states and fragmented states.  I learned that the USA, Italy and France are examples of fragmented states.
